How to Properly Burn a Candle for the First Time
The first burn of a candle is the most important. How a candle is burned during its initial use helps determine how it will perform for the rest of its life, including how evenly it burns and how long it lasts.
When a candle is lit for the first time, the wax closest to the flame begins to melt, forming a liquid wax pool. This melted area sets what is often referred to as the candle’s “memory.” If the wax does not melt evenly across the surface during the first burn, the candle may continue to burn unevenly in future uses.
Allow the Wax to Fully Melt Across the Surface
For the first burn, keep the candle lit long enough for the melted wax pool to reach the edges of the container. Depending on the candle's size, this may take 1 to 3 hours. This step helps encourage an even burn and reduces wasted wax along the sides of the vessel.
It is best to avoid extinguishing the candle too early during the first use. A short initial burn can cause the candle to melt only in the center, potentially affecting how it burns over time.
Trim the Wick Before Lighting
Before lighting the candle for the first time, trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch. A properly trimmed wick helps control the flame size, reduces excess soot, and promotes a steady, clean burn. Trimming the wick before each burn, including the first, is one of the simplest ways to care for a candle.
Place the Candle in a Stable, Draft-Free Area
Where a candle is burned matters. Airflow from fans, open windows, or heating vents can cause the flame to flicker and burn unevenly. For the first burn, especially, place the candle on a stable, heat-safe surface away from drafts to allow the wax to melt evenly.
Extinguish the Candle Safely
When it is time to extinguish the candle, avoid blowing it out forcefully, as this can cause hot wax to splatter or smoke to linger. A candle snuffer, or gently dipping the wick into melted wax and then straightening it, can help reduce smoke and keep the wick centered for the next use.
A Simple Habit That Makes a Difference
Taking a little extra care during the first burn helps ensure that your candle performs as intended. An even burn, a steady flame, and a longer-lasting candle all start with that initial use. With just a few mindful steps, you can enjoy a cleaner and more consistent experience every time you light your candle.
